First things first: Darla's not a real person

Before we start counting candles on her birthday cake, let's get something straight. Darla isn't a real girl who's been aging since the 1930s. She's a character from a series of short films and TV shows, created by Hal Roach Studios. But don't worry, we're not going to let that stop us from having some fun!

When did Darla first grace our screens?

Our little sweetheart first appeared in the Our Gang comedy shorts in 1922. Yes, you heard it right! That's over 100 years ago. The first film she starred in was Mabel's Married Life, where she played a mischievous little girl. But it wasn't until 1931 that she became a regular in the series, stealing hearts and causing trouble with her signature pigtails and dimples.

Darla through the decades

Darla stuck around for quite a while, appearing in over 40 Our Gang shorts between 1931 and 1935. That's a lot of screen time for a little girl! But here's where things get a bit tricky. You see, Darla was played by three different actresses during this time. Yes, you read that right! Three little girls shared the role of Darla, each bringing their own unique charm to the character.

First up, we have Dorothy DeBorba, who played Darla from 1931 to 1933. She was just a toddler when she started, so she must have been around 2 or 3 years old. Then, Cheryl Blomberg took over the role in 1934, when she was about 5 years old. Lastly, Evelyn Ann Hughes played Darla in 1935, when she was around 7.

Darla's legacy lives on

Even though the original Our Gang shorts are over 90 years old, Darla's spirit lives on in various remakes and homages.
